By
invitation of the Spanish Publishers’
Federation, Québec will be the guest of
honour at the Liber International Book Fair
to be held this October 8—10 in Barcelona.
More than 30 Québec publishers will
participate in the event, where they will
also attend business meetings with their
Spanish and Catalan peers.
Liber is Spain’s largest publishing forum
and the world’s second-largest Spanish
language event after the Guadalajara
International Book Fair held in Mexico,
where Québec attended as the guest of honour
in 2003. Liber’s decision to highlight
Québec at this year’s book fair is unique in
that all previous invitees have been
countries.
Spain is a major player on the
international publishing scene, particularly
in terms of the Latin American market and
the NAFTA region, with Mexico and the U.S.
constituting its primary overseas markets.
To mark the occasion, the Government of
Québec has developed a diverse lineup of
cultural programming entitled Imagina
Québec, to run from September 26 to
October 11. Activities for the general
public will include literary events, a movie
festival, concerts, dance and theatre
performances, educational workshops on
contemporary Québec culture, an information
session on the translation of Québec
literature and a forum on the dissemination
of youth theatre.
We have chosen to supplement the
exceptional participation of our authors and
publishers in the Liber International Book
Fair with a wide array of artistic and
cultural activities in hopes that the people
of Barcelona will join us in celebrating the
400th anniversary of our province’s capital,
and part with new ideas about our culture!
